The Problem and Opportunity
In recent decades, the Academy Awards have reflected a significant trend in the American movie industry. At a time of growing international markets, fewer and fewer films were produced that appealed to the mainstream adult audience.
Film critics offer several reasons for this including:
- Most of the good stories have already been told.
- Major studios have been primarily interested in sequels of older films to limit risk and comic book superhero movies that allowed for product spin-offs.
- Independent producers attempted to fill the void; however, the difficulty in securing funds for theatrical quality productions and national promotion campaigns limited their potential.
- In recent years, there has been a decrease in theatrical attendance due to the popularity of viewing films on streaming services. This transition reduced an important revenue stream which many believe decreased the number of quality films.
Regardless of the reasons, there has been widespread agreement among consumers for many years that there is a desire in the marketplace for more entertaining films.
HAWKINS + LENNON Productions has been formed to organize and produce theatrical quality films that are also suitable for online content providers. Our first set of projects are comedies.
The kind of humor we appreciate is evident in films like Good on Paper (2021), Licorice Pizza (2021), Lady Bird (2017), The Big Sick (2017), and Masterminds (2016). These movies remind us that authentic humor is refreshingly different from those that rely on vulgar acts, excessive profanity and endless mocking.
HAWKINS + LENNON is also well positioned to produce television programs for premium cable channels and online distributors.
